Rick Latona: What makes a domain sellable?

Many articles have been written about how to value a domain name. This is not one of those articles.

I sell domains so I'm much more concerned with what names people want to buy and what they'll pay then I am about their true value. What I mean by that is, I'm not one of those guys that thinks that every domain is priceless or needs to have a huge price tag on it. I try very hard to be realistic when putting numbers on them.

I have one question that I ask myself that is more important to me than any other question. What sort of website would be put on the name? When buyers buy a name from me, more often than not they want the name because they have some sort of vision for it. What's the obvious vision?

Memorable Domains: A personal account of Internet World 2008

Memorable Domains exhibited at the recent Internet World tradeshow, held at Earls Court in London from April 29 to May 1, 2008. We were on stand E277, towards the back of the hall (on the Internet World side of the central aisle) and facing SEDO's stand, if you attended the show and are trying to remember where we were.

Mark surveys the 'wreckage' as we set up the Memorable Domains stand

Mark (a long-time friend who came all the way from Vienna to help me with the show, and who deserves a much bigger vote of thanks than the few words I can devote here) and I were there, dressed in our grey Memorable Domains polo shirts with the distinctive pocket flashes.

The experience was interesting in many ways, not least because it enabled us to get a capsule overview of the current condition of the domain name market in the UK in a very short space of time.
