In addition, even further proof that online auctions are far from a “game over” scenario, Scott Cendrowski for Fortune recently stated:
eBay’s core business of online auctions is struggling. Traffic has dropped as consumers favor websites with set prices, such as Amazon.com and Walmart.com. The stock is off nearly 70% since 2004.
However, investors got some good news July 22 when eBay’s earnings and revenue beat Wall Street’s expectations.
Analysts said the surprise results were the result of changes eBay (EBAY, Fortune 500) made in 2008 when it altered its listing fees to encourage fixed-price sales, revamped its ratings system to reward top sellers, and improved its search engine.
It looks like eBay’s turnaround plan is taking hold, but can the changes revive the auction giant for the long term? We asked two analysts for their take.
So the biggest auction brand online is going towards a fixed price marketplace. I read somewhere (not sure where) that eBay’s marketplace (BIN) now accounts for nearly half their revenue on the site. Many years ago I used to browse through eBay listings, I don’t anymore, and I know many others who do not either. When vast amounts of items are listed and sales conversions are minuscule it works fine for the auction house, but for the individual seller it is complete injustice. When the needs arise to sell, chances of selling are slim to none.

BIN prices are good in an auction, Fixed price i.e no auction can put people off imo.
When I go into an auction, I have my max price in my mind - If there is a reasonable BIN, Then I would BIN to save losing it but otherwise, I put in a low offer and hope to steal it for as cheap as poss.
If it was a fixed price, that I didnt agree with then I wouldnt even bother trying to get it cheaper, I would just not bid.
Amazon and ebay are totally different imo - I go to amazon to get something in particular, I go to ebay to see what I can find cheap. . .
I don’t believe that domain auctions are dead. All you need to do is look at other marketplaces where domain auctions attract large numbers of domainers bidding on the best names. High-reserve auctions are likely a turnoff and the domain business has seen some unsuccessful auctions where most names were high-reserve but not of premium quality and few bidders showed up. How do end users view domain auctions? I’m not sure. I can’t imagine that a $28 starting bid is a turnoff but an auction format does introduce uncertainty into the buying process. I have promoted several of my BIDO auctions to potential end users and received no bids. The domains weren’t premium names but with a $28 starting bid I was surprised to receive zero offers. Perhaps introducing a BIN pre-bid option would give buyers an option they currently do not have of avoiding a bidding war (at an acceptable price to both parties). Consumers like options and perhaps domain buyers do as well.
