A Charity Auction: Bido To The Rescue

hacienda.gif

Sometime next week we will be announcing the date for our first charity auction on Bido. It is something we had in mind for a while but now that the opportunity has presented itself, we couldn’t say no.

An old friend of mine, Donna Mahony (who also happen to run DomainBoardroom, a private domain message board), posted on her Facebook status the following:

Trying to raise $$ for a local burro rescue that needs hay badly. If you can help please send $$ to PayPal donna@donnamahony.com or write me for more info. TIA.

As giving back has always been part of who I am (and my family, business partners, and our various businesses for that matter) I sent her a quick message for further details. After hearing the story the only thing that was left to ask is “Where do I send the money?”. At this point though I realized, we can do so much better if we put this whole thing in motion.

So here’s what will happen:

First and foremost, all proceeds from the auction event will go to the Hacienda de los Milagros (animal sanctuary and rescue center), including Bido standard commission fees. The eight-acre sanctuary situation was covered a little while ago in a local paper, The Daily Courier. You can read the full story here (good read!).

1. We need donations of decent/good/great animal/ pet related domain names for auction. If you have something in mind (all extensions welcome!) either post here or email to jarred@bido.com

2. We will talk to few friends and see if anyone is willing to further sponsor the event. My goal is to find additional revenue from site sponsorship for the day. If you are interested, again, either post here or email Jarred@Bido.com

3. We will also have ability to give donations regardless of auction (during auction). Hope to see you all participate here (I know I will!)

4. The key to this to be successful is exposure, within the domain industry as well as with animal lovers and the world in general. We will put some effort into this however, anyone that gets the word out is helping us tremendously. In short, we need your help!

5. Donna Mahony will be in the Bido chat room during the auction event to talk about the charity, domains, and other interesting stuff. Donna is an old timer and I really am looking forward to having her there with us.

There aren’t words to express my gratitude. I visit HDLM http://www.haciendadelosmilagros.org regularly and it is a super place. If anybody has questions, I’ll be happy to check in here and respond. Let’s all show the world that domainers care!

Thank you from me also to Francois for helping spread the word and to Jarred for his generous donations. Thanks also to the members of DomainBoardroom.com who met an immediate and urgent need and donated more than $2k to me personally and we were able to provide 4 days feed on the spot.

  7. 7 Donna Mahony

We just received a donation that allowed us to buy another days feed. The cost of one days feed alone is $500. Then there are all the other expenses.

  8. 8 Donna Mahony

    I’ll also be donating CockatielCare.com

    @Alan Dunn BrazilianBulldogs.com sweeeeet! Thank you…again!

  11. 11 Josh M.

    This is great.

I suggest focusing on quality names that will bring in as much revenue as possible.

A few quality animal names sounds good,.. and additional high quality names that are outside of that category are likely to result in a larger donation to the sanctuary, which will help establish a more stable food supply and better level of care for the animals.

  12. 12 Allan Lawrence

I’ve been to the rescue farm. For any of those that haven’t, look for pictures Donna has promised. He’s doing his best to save many types of lost critters. Mostly burros (donkeys), but horses and others too. When I say he has dedicated his life to this cause, I mean every minute of every day. For people that don’t live nearby (like myself), Its tough to understand. If your local shelter has 30 or 50 dogs and cats…..imagine 100-200 donkeys and horses, left to themselves

  13. 13 John Martel

Great to hear, this is awesome. I always help out animals when I can. I’ve made a few free animal web sites, including one for the shelter I used to volunteer at and I adopted my cat Tigger from.

I don’t have a lot of animal names in my portfolio, but I’d love to donate these to the auction.

The auction will be Wednesday, April 1st, 2009.

The URL of the auction is: http://www.bido.com/Auction?name=animalrescue.us

You may place your bids at this time… from now right up until the auction ends. The auction starts at 1PM Eastern and will last for approximately 1 hour. Thanks to all the contributors so far. There’s plenty of time to get more domains in for the auction, so please email me at jarred@bido.com if you would like to submit domains.

Please know that if you submit domains to the charity auction, you may still bid - as 100% of the proceeds will go to the rescue. We wish nothing but the best to the rescue, and we’re happy to help the cause.

See you at the auction! More details to follow!

  15. 15 Sahar Sarid

FancyDogs.com is donated by Bob Olea. Thanks bob!

    Sahar

  16. 16 SDouglas

Hi Sahar, Donna and the rest of the submitters…

I love burros! I love burritos!

I’d like to participate in anything that Sahar is involved in, and also Donna.

So I would like to offer the domain name:

    RecoverPet.com

I first bought this domain to help Eric Rice and his heroic attempts to save the pets of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Eric was the first in the domain industry to really put his money and time into this incredible endeavor, and he achieved more than we all expected (including interviews on MSNBC, USA TODAY and many other media forums). However, there were many other websites that popped up at that time, and although my company raised over $5000 to help Eric’s rescue efforts (*thanks also to Ammar Kubba of Thought Convergence and Sevan Derderian who was with Oversee.net at the time), the domain was never used.

But RECOVERPET.COM is a pretty good domain for people looking for their lost pets. My wife and I recently had our three year old Master kitty, MOJO, disappear about a month ago, and he hasn’t returned yet. This causes grief and stress, and we put up a lot of signs on telephone poles and searched rescue and shelters daily. Still no Mojo. However, Mojo is a cat that knows his catness, so wherever he is, he’s still the King like he was at our house.

Anyway, I am also concerned with people (mainly children) who are suffering from the economy, lost jobs, lost homes, and other Bush legacy after-effects.

Can we next do a charity event for those humans in need? I saw a 20/20 segment this week that made me feel like a dog for making money and buying “ego things” when I know that money can be better used helping others.

If all the powerful rich successful domainers picked a charity that helped the homeless and the hurting, I’ll bet we could easily raise a million dollars within 30 days. If we couldn’t, what are we doing promoting our business as anything “successful”? Just think if the “Two Ricks” (Schwartz and Latona) donated $250,000 each? Instead of buying a nice speedboat or new car, give to help others. (Sorry Ricks for putting you on the spot). But all of us can give something commiserate to our yearly income to helping others, even if it’s only $100.

Thanks Sahar, thanks Donna! And Donna, I have an acre in which to possibly house a burro if you’re trying to find homes for them. I have to check my city’s ordinances and all that, but email me and let’s discuss it!

(Jarred, email me for transfer of the domain, thx bro)

    cheers!

  17. 17 Sahar Sarid

    Hi Stephen,

First, thanks for the domain donation, much appreciated!

As for other charities, I think it’s a great idea! More charity auctions will definitely come to Bido, just don’t know when yet. Let us run this one, get our feet wet, and then we will be a little bit smarter to know maybe

    Thanks for the support!

    Sahar

  18. 18 Sahar Sarid

More donated domains are being added directly on the site. For latest additions, see this link.

    Cheers,

    Sahar

  19. 19 Donna Mahony

We just received a cash donation of $500. That feeds every animal for a full day!! WhooHoo!

@SDouglas I hope it doesn’t come to having to place them but thanks! A different local rescue asked me if I could house a pair of emus .. I am afraid of emus so I had to decline!

  20. 20 Kevin Davis

Lets all get the word out and help some good people out.Cheers.

  21. 21 Jeff Hawkins

    Sahar,

Suggestion! You might want to add a sales type to Bido to cover portfolio sales. Maybe, “No Reserve - Portfolio”. Otherwise when you first see the listing it looks like a sale of just one domain.

Another suggestion. Could use a creative for this auction. Maybe a 468 x 60 banner and a couple different buttons.

    SDouglas,

I hope Mojo comes back home soon. Years ago my neighbor accidentally injured their cat when he started his truck. We figured the fan blade hit him or something. The cat ran across the street and hid in a field. A month later the cat came back like nothing ever happened.

And Recoverpet.com might just make a great website for someone to launch a service for lost pets. That was nice of you to donate that domain.

    —-answer—-

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the feedback, will discuss internally.

    Cheers

  27. 27 Patrick McDermott

    Sahar and Jarred,

I’d like to suggest that you make it very obvious that this is
going to be just one auction with the winner getting all the domains.

Reading through all the stuff so far I don’t think this is made very clear.

I saw your comment to Chef Patrick that this is a Portfolio auction
so if he bids on AnimalRescue.us, he’s actually bidding on ALL the domains.

    Is this correct?

    —-answer—-

    Hi Patrick,

    http://www.bido.com/Auction?name=animalrescue.us

    From description:

This auction is for a collection of domain names, and 100% of the auction proceeds will be donated to an animal rescue. The list of domains that are included is listed below, and the list will continue to grow and will be constantly updated as more domains are donated to the auction. Check back often for the complete list. All of the auction proceeds will go towards food for the animals at a non profit lifetime animal sanctuary in Arizona, Hacienda de los Milagros

It looks clear to me but I will ask our team to review.

    Thanks!

    Sahar

  28. 28 Patrick McDermott

Here’s two more if you’d like them:

    PetHouse.us
    DogBiscuits.us

    Patrick

  29. 29 Donna Mahony

I am overwhelmed by the outpouring from the community!
Thank you Bido.com and all of you who are donating!

  30. 30 Patrick McDermott

“It looks clear to me but I will ask our team to review.”

Yes Sahar it’s there but not so obvious if you’re just skimming.

I didn’t realize it and neither did Chef Patrick obviously.

It was just a friendly suggestion anyway.

Maybe it’s just folks named Patrick that are dense. :-)
Patrick (not Chef Patrick - although I was a Chef)

AS founder and director of the sanctuary that will benefit from this wonderful outpouting, please know how grateful the residents and I are for this wonderful opportunity.
Huge thank you to the domain community, members of DomainBoard.com, Sahar Sarid, Jarred Cohen, all who donated in any way, and espedially to a wonderful friend and supporter, Donna Mahoney. Like virtually all charities, especially in the current state of the economy, we must significantly expand our donor base to continue doing what we do for whatever cause we support. With charities working at full capacity, and more need appearing daily, we must count on everyone to do all they are able, to continue to provide what we do for those who simply are not able to do for themselves. It is one world, and we are all in this together. Bless you all for this outpouring!

    Wynne

  33. 33 Allen

It is great to see so many pitch in I own The Healing Barn where do rescue and rehab for horses (and 1 Donkey). We have been doing it alone for over 10 years si I know how feed bills add up fast. i wish you great success for the auction and for your facility.

    God Bless
    Allen

  34. 34 John Martel

I was just reminded of this auction from a post in DNN. One of the names I donated was stuck in a 60 day hold, so I was unable to transfer it at the time of the auction. Was it Sahar that won the names? Give me a shout and I can get that final name to you.
