Bido Auctions No More (For Now)

We gave it another shot today but still had major tech issues. We believe the right thing to do now is to spend time figuring out the issues and come back when we are ready. It may be few days, weeks, months, none of us really knows.

All who submitted domains to Bido we will work with you to get it back to your accounts.

Other Bido services, DNZoom and Portfolio Help, will continue to run normally once we get servers back online.

I will update on this more later.

Sahar, this is UNBELIEVABLE. Have you gotten any sleep?

Just a few questions: Was Bido ever beta tested? Was the chat feature that Bido was attempting to implement written in Java by a 3rd party provider? Is Nov. 5th still a target?

    Looking forward to your updates.

    —-answer—-

    Hi Jamie,

We always beta test before releasing features. The chat feature was tested as well however, the combination of chat and the massive server loads was unexpected. Even after we disabled the chat, in today’s auction, the problem was not solved. While we are sure we can get things back up relatively quickly we are going to take few steps back to regroup before bringing the site back up.

    Cheers

    Good decision Sahar.
And don’t worry, we understand and support you.

    Thanks Francois, much appreciated!

Sahar, you’ve made the right decision in shutting Bido down for now. I hope you can identify the problem to get things back up and running soon. Not sure if this will have any negative impact on your November deadline. Either way, Bido is a very promising domain auction site, which I hope will continue to grow in the coming years. Good luck!

Thanks Dominik, much appreciated. I too hope it won’t effect what we have in mind for November. We will continue to do our best either way.

    Cheers

How much traffic was the auction experiencing?

    —-answer—-

Not sure of exact numbers. A lot of those continued to hit refresh to see latest bids even though we push the data to the main page. Human behavior is hard to change.

    Well Sahar,

Don’t let any of this get you down. You’re doing cutting edge stuff here and backing out for a bit gives your team time to regroup and figure this problem out. Catch your breath, get some rest, prop them feet up or go for a swim.

I wouldn’t know how to help but if you should need anything just holler. You don’t need to answer this post either. Take care of yourself instead.

    And remember….. Keep smiling!

Rule #1 for database driven sites with high loads…Always cache your SQL queries … or … create a process that publishes a static web pages every few minutes instead of slamming the database with every request. Believe me I’ve learned this the hard way … as are you …

    Hi

Hang in there man. Ups and downs. Don’t let this get you down. Its a learning curve and your making strides in developments vs your ppc parking buddies.
Ups and downs in forming a business as you know.

You will come through just fine and with all the challenges you had early on and getting into domaining this is nothing.

Take a cruise with Rick, have some cocktails, tackle this when you come back refreshed. Then when its working again and right way rent take another trip lol.

    —-answer—-

    Thanks Jeff!

We’re not feeling bad or anything, we know where we are heading with Bido and that what we have done so far was merely a testing bed for where we are heading. Time will tell the whole story.

Good idea on taking a cruise with Rick. He does owe me a dinner (or I think!) :)

    Cheers

Gmail was down for an hour and a half the other day. Gmail!! Most people don’t realize how challenging it can be to carry out serious scalability on web apps in certain conditions. Better to run into these issues early on and come out of the experience better and stronger for the long-run which will no doubt be the case with you guys.

Best of luck with the fixing and stress-testing for the future.

A combination of CommanderFun’s suggestion and some ajax would certainly help reduce server load while still making sure people have access to real-time data.

But then, your team knows what they’re doing and you probably don’t need us telling you how to suck eggs :)

Good luck getting it back online, Sahar.

    Love your work ;)

    —-answer—-

    Thanks Japh,

Yes, our guys definitely know the stuff inside out, this is not going to be an issue of just getting back online and running auctions but dealing with what got us to the mess where we are right now (architecture issues). If it was just about going back to live auctions we could have done it for tomorrow, just reverting back to old builds which worked out perfectly fine for the last month.

We definitely plan to take our time here, regroup, work thoroughly on getting things not just to where they were, but to where they are going.

    Cheers

Hi Sahar, Hope things get sorted for you soon. You can’t try something new without setbacks, that’s just a fact of life.
Be proud that you stuck your head above the parapet and had a go despite all the criticism. It’s the only way to succeed, but you already know that. From every adversity…

  13. 13 Capable Media

It’s always good to see a proactive stance on technology related issues. A lot of others might have continued to just “try to make it work” with some piecemeal solution. It’s nice that you guys are taking the time to fix the issue rather than patch it.

    Hey Sahar,

Don’t feel bad. Your website did a lot of good for many of us. I am sure that you will get the problems of your site fixed. If it wasn’t for your site I wouldn’t be the proud owner of http://www.investmentlenders.com and http://www.housingbonds.com (if anyone knows what housing bonds means please let me know, lol - sounded like a GREAT domain name though)

Plus I am GLAD that you hired WONDERFUL people like Jarred Cohen to work for you.

As the famous saying goes. (and forgive my French but…) “Shit happens!”

Good Luck!! I shall return. :-)

I admire a guy that does the right thing. I think you should run for President as an independent. The one guy that does the right thing for the community.

Just an idea, how about a streaming live auction that would be scheduled? This is not being done currently.

    —-answer—-

We’re in process of getting Darren in the presidential race ! :)

We thought of live streaming, maybe one day. Right now we have more important things to take care of.

    Cheers

Just a small request if you could put the problem in pdf file so, the member of bido could download and have a over view.
    Good luck guys
