Social bookmarking site Delicious has flipped the switch on its brand, encouraging users to visit the easy-to-remember Delicious.com instead of the often typod del.icio.us.
While admittedly they saw many confusions the real question is how much did it cost them? how much others have made on it while they were figuring it out? My guess, millions of dollars.
Which other brands are on the same boat but yet to figure it out? Under the Yahoo umbrella, I do have a couple in mind.
Before we go, Bido update. Auction for DebtSpecialist.com is underway. Current bid is US $2,356.00, 16 minutes to go.
Edit: Closing price US $2,356.00
Have a great day!

One of the ones next in line I know of are http://fav.or.it and Flytunes.fm
Then again, sometimes startups can’t even get their desired names for a “reasonable” price, as the domain owner tries to hold out until the buyer grows bigger and gets more cash. That’s maybe what happened with Delicious.
Then the only alternatives are to pick a different brand to start with, or go at it with a weird substitute until the cash is there.
There’s nothing wrong with the other TLDs but dot com is king and will remain so as far down the road as I can see. So don’t base your brands on anything else.
That said, I thought the del.icio.us brand and domain right clever but it didn’t “type” all that well.
