My View On NamingSchool.Com (Today’s Domain On Bido)

A little disappointed by expert commentary today on Bido so I decided to chime in a little myself. Since it is required to log in to see the discussion option on Bido I will just copy it here for you. Comments as always are most welcome, highly appreciated!

Looking at the comments below I feel as many are addressing the domain at a face value proposition, as if it must be either a PPC domain or an obvious top category (finance, business, travel) in order to be worth something.

How many babies are born each day? How many parents are dealing with naming their babies every single day? How many brand owners need help defining their brands? Small owner businesses who are not familiar with naming and branding at all.

I see a lot of potential in the name however as most domains, it is more about one’s vision than the domain itself.

I feel this one is going to go really cheap, not due to quality but due to extremely narrow vision by many.

Cheers

Sahar

I fully understand your view on brandability, but I’ve got to say that this name was stretching your vision too far.

This strikes me as a name that doesn’t know what it is - brandable trying to be generic? Or generic with no obvious meaning?

Not a good name IMO, and seemingly no-one elses too.

It just means we have a long way to go in terms of education, both domainers and even more so, end users. I do think the domain was as good if not better than many others that are sold for much more on a regular basis, both on Bido and other platforms. Why didn’t it then sell for more? Too many factors, some of which I’m sure unaware of. The obvious factor I think is it is not one of the top categories (business ,travel, health, finance, etc). We’re all learning as we progress so no harm done, looking forward to learning with future auctions.

    Sahar,

Please take this as constructive criticism. You are wrong about namingschool.com. I see you posted the domain sold for $11.

    That’s a reg fee.

I wouldn’t renew this domain if I owned it.

It has nothing to do with educating domainers. You have the right audience. You just need to put through the right domains.

Put through a crappy reg fee name is not good for bido.

There are two types of auction buyers:

    1. Those that always bid but never very high because they want good deals.

    2. Those that rarely bid but will pay a high price because they want the item.

NO RESERVE Auction prices are market prices whether people want to admit it or not.

It only takes two people from type #2 to make the price go through the roof. When type 2 does not get involved in type 1 bidding, the auction item has a low market value, simple as that.

NamingSchool.com only drew in type 1 bidders.

That is not Bido’s fault, that is the auction item’s fault.

To me, it sold for too much money.

I used to buy domains like this one easily for hundreds of dollars, and at times thousands as well. From a buyer’s perspective, I’ve been there, I know what it takes to buy like that. For the most part, unlike most in the domain business, I bought domains based on my feelings, based on what I thought I could do with them. Do you think “Bido.com” is a good domain? Do you think it would fetch 10,000.00 as a domain only if put on an auction site, with no reserve and 1$ starting bid? I assure you it won’t. Now take the same domain and put the vision we have for it, what is it worth now? Add to that our commitment, our technologies, our team, our funding, and it isn’t a domain anymore, it’s a business. Yes, a lot more is being put into it but it all started somewhere. At times, it starts with an idea, at others, it starts with a domain.

So why do we see things so differently? You look at a domain and see what’s there. I look at a domain and see what could be there.

Most domainers? They see what’s there. That will evolve over time.

I’m not sure why that name went so low. I was out of town but I might have been inclined to bid on that one. Especially at that low price if I’d been here.

Over on the Monster Truck side of things here I hear a lot of questions about naming trucks, registering truck names, copyrights, trademarks, how to find out if someone else ever used a name, registering a domain for a truck and how to buy a well known truck with an established name.

Sometimes I get calls at home from people about truck names and they usually have one or more of the above questions. I own a website with a really silly little name generator on it just to help people get started on creating Monster Truck names. It’s entertaining but people do use it to find names.

Then there was a the announcement over the weekend that a couple we know are expecting a baby soon. First question was, “boy or girl?”, or “What do want? A boy or girl?”, and the second question was, “What do you plan to name the baby?”.

And in our business this domain name suggests it’s own use. A place to learn about picking good domain names, buying and registering domain names, what makes a good domain name. Fixing name and registration problems. This name is a good one for a developer.

“So why do we see things so differently? You look at a domain and see what’s there. I look at a domain and see what could be there.”

On that note any reg fee domain could then be put up on Bido.com
I understand what you’re saying, but NamingSchool.com doesn’t fall in that category.

A reg fee domain stays a reg fee domain if there is nothing to enhance it’s value.

Not only do i have to disagree with your analysis on NamingSchool.com - that it should have yielded a higher number, but i have to respectfully say your completely wrong on it.

“Most domainers? They see what’s there. That will evolve over time.”

Not for NamingSchool.com it won’t - because there is nothing there ;)

the title of this post caught my attention as i own NamingTeam.com

Companies hire NamingTeam(s) for their branding needs, and before you become a part of Naming team you go to a Naming School right? or
    NamingUniversity.com (available)

Naming is a BIG problem, and it is growing BIGGER (self-employment is on the rise etc…), every new business faces this problem, and corporations face it everyday. Many underestimate the importance of a good name, many new startups fail because of a bad name and don’t even realize that that is a big part of the reason why they failed. They don’t realized because the proposition by itself seems too absurd. It can’t be measured easily, and anything that can’t be measured easily can’t be quantified, proven easily, logically,.. so it is dismissed.
Belief in a Vision requires people taking a leap of faith, and that someone remarkable that shared your vision, just didn’t show up because TargetAudience: visionaries, is very small (i think).
