Bido: We’re Learning!

It’s been a little over two weeks since Bido’s first auction and so far, we’ve learned a lot!

For example, Bido’s first “three letter” auction (RYY.COM) which resulted in $7,124 sales price, unlike what some thought was a bad price due to the venue, was in fact a correct prediction of further decline in three letter .com domain trading.

Another example is considering the fact we have been in the domain business for almost a decade you would think we know values better when in reality, with AutoFilms.com (closing price 15 $US) We saw that our ideas of values are sometimes extremely far away from market reality.

Also, looking at domain submissions we learned that if you state that you are willing to give a guarantee if certain guidelines followed, domain owners will submit anything and everything for your consideration, mostly outside the boundaries stated. Because of that there is a big change coming to Bido: Bido will promote real liquidity, no more Bido Guarantees. From today, all domains listed on Bido will be 1$, No reserve, and no Bido Guarantee to sellers. As a seller, if you can be honest with yourself and willing to find out the true market value of your domain, and if you have a decent domain (4-5 figures est. liquidity value), Bido may be a place for you to list your domain.
How will it work? Will sellers be willing to be honest with themselves? There are literally millions of domains in the marketplace for sale and a fraction of buyers. Most domains will never get what sellers want. Furthermore, most domains will never sell at all. Our goal with Bido is to provide real liquidity to those who wish to move some of their inventory for the best dollars the market will pay today! We know, it is easier said than done, we have a long way a head of us, but we are committed, we are driven, and we do believe we can make it happen.

And before I go, today’s auction is Compete.net, a great one word .net domain name. As always, 1$, No reserve!

(edit: closing price US $2,073.00)

Happy bidding!

Hi Sahar, don’t you think that with no Bido Guarantees at all to sellers then the quality of names will not get any better than they have been ?.

From one of your earlier posts you said (something like) there were hundreds of thousands of names submitted but you did see any that were good enough or had a reasonable asking price.

Have all the names listed so far been your own ones ?

How are you going to encourage people to list a name for $1 with no guarentee especially considering that names have also to be transfered to Moniker first ?

Also with only 1 a day there must be a very looong waiting list to get listed !

I think the experts comments is a great feature and very interesting to follow but it would be nice if you could show a little background info about each expert so we all know who they are.

    Good luck with it.

Sellers will make their own calculations what to list and what not to list. As far as quality, we’re happy with the quality of domains listed and sold so far. If you think about it, at a starting price of 1$, none of them was a bad value to buyers. As for domain listings, we took some of our domains to kick-start bido. A number of domains from submissions are making it to Bido this week and soon we hope all listings will be of others.

All experts have bio pages. While not all as of now filled up the space we do encourage experts to complete profiles (include pictures, bio).

As for domain transferred to Moniker, this is something we are working on to improve. It is not a must to move to Moniker and we do have accounts elsewhere to make life easier. If your domain is chosen to be listed we will work out the details on an individual basis.

    Hope that helps,

    Cheers

Hi Sahar, I can only assume if you don’t post my comments that you were perhaps offended by them ?

They were very logical questions and not meant to offend you in any way at all. Please accept my opologies if they did.

Gazzip said, “don’t you think that with no Bido Guarantees at all to sellers then the quality of names will not get any better than they have been?.”

I’m thinking Bido will only work well for good, quality names as it wouldn’t be a good place to auction a marginal name without the price guarantee.

As Bido goes along it will get a well deserved reputation for better and better names and the immediate market within the Bido Bidders Community will come prepared to pay market prices for those higher quality names.

And one more thought. A lot of people complain that this auction or that auction has poor, lousy, low quality names. The auction house can only sell what is bought to the floor.

Our job as domainers is to take the tools we have to acquire the best names we can afford and then make them more valuable by promotion, development or else shrewd market timing.
