What Domain Names Would You Like To See Listed On Bido?

Earlier today, while browsing a couple of domain forums (NamePros, DNForum, DomainState), I saw a poll on DomainState that indicates the first batch of Bido domains is weak. Our take on it is it’s all relative. “Weak” in comparison to what? Million dollar domains? six figures domains? For what we’re doing, starting price of 1$ and no reserve, we feel these domains are extremely strong. The question we asked some of our friends before the list was chosen was: would you bid 10$ for this domain? Would you pay 100$ for that? How about 1K, or 5K? The responses to these questions on the list published were all in the four and five figure range. Now will these domains actually go for these prices? This is what we’re all going to find out. It is not what I believe they should sell, it is not what other believe these domains should sell, it is about what the market will bear at the time of auction.

From our experience the list we published represents a solid five figures inventory for a total starting price of US $8.00 and no reserve. While we would all want to see million dollar inventory for 1$ starting point and no reserve, without solid history and experience in the auction field, without making sure the software works and handles everything as we hope it would, it is just unrealistic at best. We believe, once we test the system, once we build history, once we are more comfortable, at some point such inventory would be available.

I would like to hear more of what kind of domains and domain categories you would like to see listed? Are you interested in three letter .com domains? four letter .com? product type domains, information based domains? Geo domains? IDN’s? possibly other extensions than .com? SEO (Search Engine Optimization) driven domain names? Direct Navigation (Type-In) domain names? Revenue (cashflow) domains? The more you tell us the better we can serve you.

Have a great day!

Sahar

P.S.

A little update for the day, we’re testing and testing and testing some more. All of us are extremely tired, working days and nights to meet the deadline. We look at the release date (June 18th 2008) as the STARTING POINT of Bido, not the ending point. There are going to be many fixes, many upgrades, and many issues to deal with, some that we are aware of and some would be concerns/feedback from our users. While we do not know how Bido will work at start we do have what we believe is a novel goal in mind - to create a liquid market in the illiquid world of domain names.

    Great post Sahar.

Everyone wants to buy a bargain so they want to buy domain names (I guess on bido.com) which are worth $ millions (One word generic domain names) for next to nothing and then resell it.

Once you establish a great internet presence you can list domain names for auction that are worth $ million .

You are doing great - Good Luck

Hi Varghese, and thanks so much for the feedback. Our plan is over time to improve quality of daily auctions. The start is really just a starting point.

As for paypal, Yes, paypal will be accepted. Once funds have been cleared we will pass to seller.

Since you didn’t tell me the email address I can’t send to someone to check. Please contact Sean@DNZoom.com for further help.

    Thanks that was quick!

How do you verify the buyers.and is there any page where we can see payment options available to both sellers and buyers.

    —-answer—-

As far as I know each bidder must have a credit card on file. In case one is not available I believe we will address these issues on an individual basis.

“we believe is a novel goal in mind - to create a liquid market in the illiquid world of domain names”

I don’t understand.. if you’re only auctioning 365 names a year how are you creating a liquid market? I’d like to see 1-2 word generic product/service .com domains as well as 3-letter .coms

    —-answer—-

Thanks for the feedback. As far as building a liquid market, our complete plan will be rolled in phases. The release of Bido as it is now is phase 1 of many.

With all the domains you great own, why are you doing this project?Seems like a way for you to be in favored positions to buy before antyhing comes on market. Then buy the rest back. Like shill auction.
Like you to list YOUR 100 top domains and development plans, PLEAZE!

    —-answer—-

We elaborated before why we got into the business, and we will continue to elaborate on it in the future. Those who know us know we haven’t been active buyers for years now. Our hope that every single day the guaranteed amount will be reached so we won’t have to buy the inventory ourselves. Our participation rules in auctions are extremely strict and we have no plan to break any of the rules we set forward.

The way I see it, You have 365 opportunities to get a really good domain name in the auction from whatever pool of names you’re picking from this first year. The odds appear to be in your favor to accomplish that!

I also understand your guaranteed price mechanism and think that’s good for the sellers over the long term. It might cost you a little at the start but Bido does get to keep the domain from what I’ve figured out and you could have a secondary market or “firesale” to liquidate those domains as “loss leaders” even. That’s if they don’t get resold for your price at a later auction or you develop them.

When you run a store, you first stock what you think will sell. Then your customers ask for what they want. Some of that happens on day one but a lot of the real jewel requests happen further down the road.

And your suppliers often show up with a product you never thought of and request “shelf space” in return for a sweeter deal.

So get the bugs fixed when you find them ASAP. Be responsive to the sellers, lookers, and bidders. Get some rest! And have some fun. This is going to be great!

Oh, yeah, what I’d like to see? Some of my domains selling for really big numbers. Hee hee. Keep smiling!

Thanks Jeff for the nice words and great feedback, so much appreciated by all of us here at Bido/DNZoom!

I think that the whole concept is unique and I think that it will be really interesting to see what the domains will sell for given all the hooplah.

Plus you have a very targeted, knowledgable marketplace and that will give the domains that you auction a great way to be “mass-opinioned”,and therefore an opportunity to sell for the “max” price.

I hope this experiment stays flexible and that you keep yourselves open to choosing interesting domains to auction. I would love to see some “emerging trends” show up in domains that you auction. It would be interesting to show a link to the “domain”s Google news page for the past week or show the Google trends report.

    —-answer—-

Thanks Kelly. We do have STATS tab on each auction which will integrate different information from different sources. As we go along we will consider more and more sources of information to be added as we believe making it easy for potential buyers to understand an industry will help making the decision a little easier.

    hi sahar,

glad to see your reading forums, dnzoom is now on namepros and its very encouraging to see your going out after thoughts, reading peoples thinking and list goes on..

now everyone knows .com is king, type in traffic, geo names and etc.

i would love to see you guys put up some nice .tv names weather it be a geo name, or a high profile name.

the .tv extension continues to do well, growing and media companies are beginning take notice…now one weakness for .tv i am feeling is that the big domain auctions have not taken on to .tv yet…

keep up the great work and i am thrilled to see a domainer in acutally creating a development project and branching out compared to the ppc parking..

eying on deals for a cruise in florida…would be an honor to meet you and lunch is on me..

    good luck and fortunes!

    —-answer—-

Thanks Jeff, we are looking into .TV already. May be a little too early though, we need to build some history with Bido to get a feel for what sells, what people want, and how the system handles everything.

    Cheers

Does your auction handle domain names sold in associated groups? More and more I see domainers packaging domain names in associated groups and selling them this way.

    For example:
Cars.com/Cars.asia/Cars.mobi sold together. This is a complete package. What would be the use selling these domain names seperately.

The type of domain names I would like to see are geo domain names that have the city followed by the service.
    Example -> NewYorkInsurance.com

In my books only domain names with the following endings will attract a crowd .com, .mobi, .asia, .eu and city specific endings such as .cn or .ca

    Avoid .biz, .net, .info

    Just my two cents.

Thanks for the feedback. To your question, we’re doing one domain per day, no groups.

    Sahar,

Bido’s concept is revolutionary and sound, and soon will be a respected source of finding and selling great domains. Most real domainers know the team behind Bido are experts, and anyone who says differently are either jealous, moronic, or a competitor. To even ridicule or challenge Bido’s first efforts is tantamount to chickensh*t kiddy-school mudslinging. That falls into the “Halls of the Teeny Balls”, Domainstate.

Do real domainers actually log into Domainstate?

I could care less about anything Domainstate says about you (or me). You should take the same attitude. I really don’t think anyone serious about promoting the domain industry gives a cr&p about what certain Domainstate members say. If I was you, I would ignore them and keep up the good work you’re doing.

It reminds me of a saying I live by: “Doth the soaring eagle care about the sh*t-hovering fly?” Bido is a soaring eagle.

  12. 12 Paul...aka Has2hands

    Hello,

First off, good luck with your new project…I have been keeping an eye on it for some time and can’t wait to see the results.

With that said, my comment(s) will deal with expectations. Expectations are usually high for a new product launch or website launch and are full of excitement and imagination…on all sides. Once you build up the expectations and excitement, it should continue to the grand opening.

So, some folks may be disappointed with the quality of the listed domains and their expectations have been somewhat diminished…the excitement lost.

I think most folks wanted to see high dollar domains and the RESULTS. What would happen to the very first domain sale on BIDO…it would or could be mind-blowing!!

So, I personally believe some excitement was lost and expectations lowered by the domain names…they are nice and will do fine but a few higher valued domains would have been “over the top” and expected…especially with the news and press releases.

Anyway, I understand the system being new/beta and one small step at a time…a very conservative approach…but I think you missed out on some opportunities for the grand opening.

    Just my two cents.

    Good luck and continued success.

    Paul

    —-answer—-

    Hi Paul, and thanks.

We understand these issues, were somewhat expected. I think we’ll be fine either way. Rome wasn’t built in one day, nor will Bido :)

    Sahar,

You might want to rethink the single domain/domain lots decision sometime down the road. There are many owners who hold a domain in several TLDs and want to let the whole group go. And there’s probably buyers who want a domain but don’t want to then have to haggle with the seller over the other TLDs he still owns.

Like my Monster Highway site. There’s the search and content on the dot com TLD, the hosting and other offerings on the dot net TLD and our Public Service “spots placements” over on the dot org site.

    —-answer—-

While we do keep an open mind to new ideas we’re also aware we cannot be everything to everyone.

Point taken, thanks for the feedback and explanation.

    Cheers,

    Sahar

  14. 14 SDouglas

    Hi Sahar,

I know there are good domainers on Domainstate. I just wish they’d make a supportive comment now and then for new domainer ideas (or back me up when I do).

I want to see domain forums doing constructive criticism, not sneering commentary, and I’m afraid some of the members on one or two blogs and forums don’t have the overall best intention for all domainers in mind. Even I have been attacked! ME! Mr. Lovable! Imagine that.

Bido is an exciting new tool for domain sellers and buyers, all noncompetitive domainers should support your efforts to succeed and grow. It’s good for all of us. Best wishes to you and everyone at Bido and DNzoom.
