HalfAgain has an article highlighting naming tips. At #9 they write:
9. Make sure the domain is either available or purchasable in the aftermarket. Use your favorite registrar OR use a bulk domain checker (I’ve outlined one below).
Consider this: Domain availability.
Domain availability is possibly the biggest hang-up to ever happen to naming. Sure, you can come up with great potential names, but can you come up with great potential domains that are available?
I won’t spend much time on this because it’s pretty simple. If you’re creating a name for a product or business that will require a .com, be patient, keep trying and you’ll start to get a feel for names that are more likely to be available than others. I’ve also listed some tools below that will help immensely with this.
It isn’t as simple as they make it sound, professional owners know. For example Searching for typos is so much more then searching for dropped letters. One of our own software from the old days includes changing the word from plural/singular and vice versa, jumble visual, keyboard typos, dyslexic variations, extra vowels, split and mix words, synonyms, and more. Most importantly though, professional domain owners strongly consider traffic domains for their new business, as it will help them when starting. They understand that a type-in domain will save them many thousands of dollars in traffic purchasing. This article failed completely to mention the traffic angle.
Overall the article is a good read, just feel they could/should go deeper into domaining then they have.
