Frank Schilling: Innovating Distribution Reach and Retail Name Liquidity

Via Frank’s SevenMile.com:

So this morning I had to wonder why no domain-registrar (Register.com, Godaddy, Network Solutions) or secondary-marketplace (Fabulous, Name Media, SEDO) has tried to place Domain Sales Kiosks in the Staples, Office Depots or Fedex/Kinkos of America? People looking to start a business invariably make a pit-stop at one of these locations. Imagine a small computer terminal kiosk with a printer (that prints fancy name ownership certificates) “and sales reps trained to sell secondary market domain registrations to explain the value proposition of buying a name for a few thousand dollars as opposed to registration price.

I think each store could sell several registrations a day.. and with the right margin/bonus structures, could generate thousands of dollars per store each month.. all while providing instant liquidity to longtail (lower traffic) domain portfolios.

I had a similar thought for another product years ago. I believe, as Franky, the time to explore such ideas is today, not tomorrow. Infrastructure is there, costs are relatively cheap, and training doesn’t require more then a couple of books and a couple of videos, all hosted on a website to reduce cost.

Thanks Franky for putting it out there, I’m sure someone is taking notice.

You know the saying ’some thoughts are best kept to one’s self’? This is one of them. This is the kind of thought one has when they are half awake in the shower at 7AM, day dreaming about how to get even richer while looking like a hero.

So, are domain portfolio owners with low traffic domains going to give a commission to the high school kid ‘pushing’ his sale on top of the percentage Staples will have to take? And what about the guy who owns the whole system? By the time we get through all that, it’s pointless. Remember, the guy actually doing his own office supply shopping doesn’t have an assistant. And he probably can’t afford an overpriced domain even if he wanted it.

It’s stuff like this that makes it tough for the ‘outside world’ to take the domaining business seriously.

I’m trying to develop my website for finding Available Domain Names into the best site for building up a portfolio. So if anybody has any ideas or wants to feed back any comments, that would be great

    Food for thought.

We have posititioned freshdrop.net to be the one stop resource to look for domain names in the aftermarket. Never thought about putting in a kiosk before but it is an interesting tangent.

I just don’t think the kiosk idea will fly though. Most people don’t go out to brick and mortor stores to buy something online. :P
