ui.com receives 275K offer

On Afternic:

ui.com

UI stands for “User Interface” and so much more.

Prime candidate for this domain is Michael Mann of Washington VC, investor in SEO.com. The pair would go together beautifully.

Besides, for 275K range you can’t go wrong with this domain. A little pricey however solid as a rock.

Edit: Rick Skrenta also received a six figure offer recently for his two letter domain, RT.com. This is what he had to say about it:

I’ve just been offered $125k for rt.com, the first domain I ever registered. I got it back in 1991, before there was even a web. It was for email hosted on my uucp Amiga Unix node.

The domain market sure looks hot right now. That seems like a good offer, but the domain has sentimental value, and who knows what domains might be worth in another 10 or 20 years…

Good luck to all bidders!

I’m sorry but I just don’t understand the valuation of this domain. Can you share ANY data for valuing such a domain. IMO, This is irrational exuberance. It’s nothing like; UFO, MAPS, CAT, DOG…..Thanks

There is no set answer for valuation, it is mostly how one feels about an asset and for professionals, allot of it is based on years of experience. Take a Van Gogh painting that sells for millions. What makes it sell? The market of course. People feel comfortable spending that kind of money. Domains are very similar in nature with few advantages/disadvantages. Advantages includes development, type-ins, disadvantages for the most part is lack of history, tech related. As for this domain, I feel the term is strong, the domain is rare (two letters), easy to spell, natural, say, and let’s not forget that money is cheaper today (that is an important point in valuation). It all adds up to what I believe is a good value.

You mention that money is cheaper today (and Big Ben is making it cheaper everyday). What are your thoughts on domains as an inflation hedge? Do you think that .co.uk domains might be better to buy because the clicks would theoretically be in Pounds or Euros?

    Good thinking there!
I haven’t looked into the bids in those extensions but what I do know there’s less traffic there. One has to do their homework and in general, you are thinking in the right direction.

Alex, a few more points here you may not be considering. From here on out, very few, if any 2-letter DCs will ever be available to sell (regardless of price) as most now are well established sites used by large corporations and most dormant ones are meant to be left that way as they were purchased to be kept out of the hands of competitors. The true measuring stick of its intrinsic value is what someone is willing to offer. Another post today said that an obvious fit would be a competing site against YouTube and Fox News and CNN’s I-report sites; U report I decide, which wasn’t obvious to me. The reality may lie more in the end result at the end of a hard day’s work. Last month LI.com sold for $500,000 so it will be VERY INTERESTING to see what this auction does.
