Ron Jackson Tried To Hijack My Domain

Well, not really. Here’s what actually happened: We got a request to transfer a domain we own.

eNom, Inc. has received a request from Ron Jackson (Internet Edge, Inc.) on 23 Sep 2007 for us to become the new registrar of record.

Quick email to Ron revealed he has the .US version of our domain but when he initiated a registrar transfer, he mistyped his own domain and entered the “.com”? counterpart, ours.

Ron writes:

This is yet another example of the power of .com. I actually have “xyz”?.us and want to transfer it to Enom but when I entered the order; I like most people, added .com at the end!

It does make an interesting scenario if hijackers try to send transfer requests in the name of others. If it happens to you, before jumping to conclusions, a quick email should clear things up.

Another real-life scenario along that same vein…

Sometimes people think or assume “.com” when emailing others who may have a “.net” or other extension and they mistakenly send their emails to the wrong party! This could cause both the sender and the intended recipient problems… and it can put the unintended recipient — the “.com” domain owner — in an awkward situation.

For example, a few years ago, I received some mis-addressed email this way. I handled it by replying to the sender, mentioning that the email reached a wrong address and that the message never reached the intended recipient. I also did a little research, identified the intended party, and offered the sender what I thought the correct address might be. The sender was grateful, but her several time-sensitive — and confidential — messages were not received by the intended recipient when she thought they would be, and I am sure it created some otherwise unnecessary challenges for both parties. (They were lucky, too, that I respected the confidence of their communications and provided assistance.)

…Just another example of why owning “.com” is ideal!

Dot com is the bomb. Dot net’s a good bet. Dot org is for dorks.

    —-ANSWER—-

Actually many believe .org is better then .net, as .org has a strong identity (charities, non profits) while .net really doesn’t.

Don’t you need the EPP codes to initiate a transfer for a domain name? I thought that was the purpose of them.

True, but I couldn’t think of anything else to rhyme with org.

According DomainExtensions.com the .org has 2 times more value then the dot net, and my sales confirm that fact.
