Fake 404 Error Message In Marketing

Via Advertising Lab:

A couple of commercial pitches delivered as 404 “Not Found” error messages. Wonder how many people are conditioned by the “Not Found” look, don’t notice that it’s fake and turn around. Has anyone emulated the Blue Screen of Death for the same purpose?

404 error message

Clever or not? I wouldn’t bet against it without checking conversion stats.

It might work, but I hate these deceptive marketing practices. The only way to end it is to navigate away as soon as you realize what’s happened, but I’ll bet that many inexperienced websurfers never realize that it was an ad, even after they click on it.
