From the Dot Mobi/1-800-flowers press release:
From an early lead in Internet marketing in 1992 to its current storefront in virtual world Second Life(R), 1-800-FLOWERS.COM has long been an innovator in online retail marketing. Today, the company continues that tradition with its launch of 1800flowers.mobi.
1800flowers.mobi allows users to shop for flowers by a variety of occasion categories, including birthdays, anniversaries, get well and same-day delivery. If users have an existing account at http://www.1800flowers.com, they can access it from the 1800flowers.mobi site; additionally, they can check an order’s status directly from the .mobi site.
What does it mean? It means 1-800-flowers will now (possibly) promote 1800flowers.mobi and Rick Schwartz will gain free type-in traffic to the generic flowers.mobi domain. Congratulations Rick for a well calculated bet once again. This does not yet guarantees a successful bet, just a highly calculated one, meaning, it was about odds, not about bullet proof investment. At the time of purchase, as I stood next to Rick before and during the auction, I saw how it all worked. Unlike other .mobi purchases during the auction, I believe this one was the most calculated purchase by far.
- Jeff adds: Another reason .mobi will fail is browser don’t auto highlight link with .mobi..Even the press release doesn’t include a link to the new site.
